Against the popular belief, gambling did not originate in the US. Most of the popular gambling games played in the American casinos have their origin in various foreign locales.

Heritage of gambling is somehow related to the Chinese culture. Chinese culture has been the home of numerous gambling games. Keno, a popular Chinese game is one of the original forms of the lottery games. Keno has evolved over thousands of years and is now played in played in various diluted versions in hundreds of casinos around the globe.

Another ancient Chinese game to have attained popularity has been Pai Gow. Pai Gow Pokr is the Americanized and hybridized version of the original game, it blends in the game of Pai Gow with certain elements of poker, to produce an interesting and simple game, loved by people around the globe and played in numerous casinos. However many critics, quite do not like the new version and banish it for being a too simplistic take on the otherwise “beautiful and complex” game from ancient Chinese culture.

China is not the only country to have contributed to the world of gambling, a number of European games have also made it to the league of popular games in the world of casinos. Games like Craps, Baccarat, Roulette and Black jack, all have roots in parts of Europe. Craps has its roots in the rich heritage of dice throwing games that have been around for a long time.

The game of blackjack also originated in the lap of Europe in Italy and France. While Baccarat catered mainly to the rich, Blackjack was popular amongst the masses. Till date Baccarat tables are reserved in the high roller areas of casinos, while the common people may get a taste of it at smaller tables called the Mini Baccarat tables.

Besides these games other popular betting sports include the spectator sports like thorough bred horse racing. It was developed into the modern sport in England during the 17oo’s. Later the game traveled to the US, with the early british settlers, however the traditions of the game remained relatively unchanged.

Another, relatively uncommon spectator sport is the game of Jai Alai The game because of its speed and relative brevity has become a unique gambling sport. Florida remains the center of the game.

Amongst the latest addition to the list of gambling concepts is internet gambling. Although the history of internet is not really long but even in the short period the relatively novel concept of online gambling market has served up a challenge to the traditional laws of communication in still unexplored ways.

Offshore online gaming casinos have mushroomed in recent years. Not only can the players play poker, blackjack online but also the game of slots can now be played online, in the line of video arcading.

Unhurried and uninterrupted betting is what gets the gamblers looking for a non threatening and private gaming experience to these sites.

However, offshore gambling has resulted in a maze of suggested legislations and arguments between people for and against gambling online. The major concern is The lack of regulations for these online gambling sites, which but keep the land based casinos in line with the law.

Spread Betting Basics

Spread betting is a complicated venture; the statement is nothing but a popular misconception. Proponents of this form consider it to be real easy, once the new player has understood the concept. It enables you to win or loose money depending on how close off or far you are in your betting. Spread betting can be an exciting way to win or loose money, either in casino or while playing online. Win or loss depends majorly on your grasp of the understanding of the betting process.

One of the interesting factors of spread betting is that it allows you to place bets on just about any sport from football to horse racing and at the same time you can place bets on the ever changing stock market.

People have an option on where do they wish to dip in the world of online betting. It could be in a real casino or an online gaming site. In fact there are hundred of sites also offering free training sessions and tips for players new to the world of spread betting. However once you are well versed with the basics of the game there are limitless venues where you can venture in this world. However like any other form of gambling, this too can be highly negative in yields and thus one should play only moderately, according to the financial resources you have. The game in general, is meant to be enjoyed and can yield an exciting time when played with someone educated in basics.

Like all other gambling games spread betting too has its own historical background.

Spread betting evolves from the basic qualities of gambling, placing money on the outcome and win or lose depending on that outcome. The uncertainty of winning or losing is the very reason for the addictive nature of this game. While in other forms of gambling win or loss depends on the outcome of one game, in spread gambling you may potentially win no matter what the final score. The actual numeric outcome of the game or market has no effect on you win or lose. You will win or lose as long as you bet correctly in the higher or lower margin of the outcome.

Much like other forms of betting, spread too has some bets, which are more popular then others. Some of the most wide spread betting occurs in Europe, where the well spread soccer circuit provides exciting games amply throughout the year. However with so many sports and competitions to bet on, it is hard to pin point any one form as the most popular focus. Besides games spread betting is particularly active on the financial market as well.

People spread bet on the financial markets in hopes of increasing their income or making up for the losses.

Information about betting could be found out by a number of ways. If you are decided on betting, find out as much as you can and know more as nothing here works better then an informed choice. Spending some time with someone experienced in the world of spread betting can be beneficial as you get to know the ins and outs of the game better.

The first ever recorded sports bets, took place on 10 September 1858, by two spectators watching a game between the Brooklyn Eckfords and the New York Mutuals, placed a 100$ bet as to whether or not John Holden would hit a home run. Holden himself was assured 25$ if he hit, he did and after the game all the debts were settled.

In 1865 again, in a match between the same teams, three players from the Mutuals agreed to deliberately loose a game in return of $100 each.

After the scandal involving the 1877 Louisville Grays and other fixed games prompted American League President Ban Johnson to impose a ban on all gambling inside

American League ballparks, beginning 1903. However this ban soon proved ineffective and betting flourished. Richard Higham was banned in 1882 after officiating games so that certain outcomes would be produced in return for money. The Giants manger was tainted after he betted and won 400$ on his teams winning the World Series in 1905. In 1919 eight members of the Chicago White Sox accepted money to loose the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. Since 1943 some of the game’s biggest names have been tainted and expelled at some or the time for betting and accepting money for effected performance.

Gambling and players involvement has not been limited to baseball and has affected other games like German Soccer and Horse racing also. In 2005 25 year old Robert Hoyzer admitted having accepted money in return for dishonest officiating.

Betting in US dates back a long way, but the real thrust to this industry was with the legalization of betting in Nevada in 1931. After the mining industry started slowing down, gambling was legalized by the state dry on cash, and soon things started showing up.

Once the big casinos arrived on scene, many small sports betting shops were forced out of business.

Gamblers Anonymous was formed way back in 1957, when two men started meeting on a monthly basis and discussing their gambling and supporting each other. After gaining publicity from local media coverage, the first meeting of GA was held on September 1957 in Los Angeles, California.

Membership requires a commitment to stop gambling. Most of the members consider themselves compulsive gamblers, feeling that theirs is an illness which shall worsen with time if not faced. It is not a proactive organization and intervenes only when men or women feeling they can’t help themselves and contact the organization. The organization helps by giving its members certain guidelines to be strictly followed by them. There are no membership fees and no outside donations are accepted. It is supported solely by contributions from its members.

Considering the fact that 2 million or almost 1 percent of all Americans gamble as a \ compulsion the situation is grave and does need aid. Besides GA, there is also the National Council on Problem Gambling, helping people getting out of their addiction with gambling.

Hollywood has had its share of movies based on sports betting. The hustler, blue chip, and White Men Can’t Stand were all based on the issue of Sports Betting.

Before you plan a trip to Las Vegas or Atlantic City or going on a cruise with legalized Gambling, certain things you must know of, and the most important one being How To Win. Gamble is all about taking a calculated risk, using your skills combined with a strategy and finally one thing that all of us want, Luck.

The first and the foremost thing, quite undeniably is how to play the game. One should know the intricacies of the game, like how the bets are made, rules and winning odds. Watching a couple of games could be a good exercise too, watching the player's moves and those of the dealers also. What makes a good gambler? The question has been around for years. Skills needed in the games are different, while slot machines are popular for requiring absolutely no sills, yet some strategies can help you in deciding as to which games to play and how much to bet.

A bit more sill is however required for the card games such as poker and blackjack. Poker face is another ever necessary that that helps keep your opponent from calling your bluff. Probabilities and statistics do play a role and knowledge of the two can help you decide, whether or not to hit on a 12 in blackjack.

However games like lottery, scratch cards and keno, according to Lenny Frome, which require absolutely no strategizing. Just pick the right numbers and you and carry home wads of cash. Two types of betting quite similar to each other are horse betting and sports betting. These bets are possible on a variety of scales. You may bet with a friend, an office pool, or the majestic scale of the Las vegan sports betting area.

Irrespective of whether particular games have the potential to use strategizing or skill, all gamblers believe or want to, that they are in control of the game and in some cases they really do. You can be on your way of becoming a better gambler by familiarizing yourself with the games and the statistics involved.

Amongst Gamblers the most popular games are poker, blackjack, horseracing, slots, roulette, baccarat, craps, keno and lottery.

While poker and blackjack are popular card games which require skills and strategies, slots are pure luck. Games of lottery and keno are also more about luck then skills.

Games like Poker attract large numbers of people to the casinos every year. Mastering this game is all about knowing the game n and out; building relationship between players and understanding that you loosing are your major fault and the dealer can't do much to get you on the winning track. Blackjack is another majorly loved game, and a good knowledge of probability along with risk taking capacity can make you into a real winner.

Game of Keno, which is slightly complex and in many ways matches Lottery, is often described as a game of pure luck. Originated in China the game traveled to America ion the 1800's. However, there are some mathematically complex statistics to your aid, but they are as mentioned "too complex" leaving it surely as a game of Luck.

In this guide I will show you:

# how to get your free bets without having to risk your money on qualifying bets

# how to use these free bets to guarantee a good return.

This guide will assume that you already have at least one betting account open.

Step 1 - Getting The Free Bets

This step is very simple. To get your free bets you will normally have to stake a certain amount of money. We will work on the premise that you will get rewarded with a free £25 bet for staking £25 on a single event.

First find an event with only 2 outcomes; I like to use baseball for my bets.

Simply stake £25 on the favorite for the game to qualify for your free bet. Then stake the relevant amount with your current bookmaker, for the opponent to win, to cover the £25.

Example:

LA Dodgers to win at 1.68 with the bookmaker offering the free bet. Franciscoisco Giants to win at 2.4 with your current bookmaker.

Bet £25 on LA
Bet 25/1.4 = £17.86 on SF

Possible outcomes:

LA win:

profit from LA bet = 25 * 0.68 = £17
loss from SF bet = £17.86
total loss to get free bet = £0.86

SF win:

profit from SF bet = 17.86 * 1.4 = £25
loss from La bet = £25
total loss to get free bet = £0.00

Betting the £25 on the favorite allows you to bet the least amount in total to receive your free bet.

Learn Blackjack Card Counting and Beat the Dealer!

Learn Blackjack Card Counting and Beat the Dealer!
By Stephen Todd Platinum Quality Author

Article Word Count: 573 [View Summary] Comments (0)

Blackjack is one of the few games where you can get an edge over the casino.

This is something you can learn and profit from quickly and easily.

Before you learn to card count however, you need to be familiar with blackjack basic strategy, the system that all card-counting strategies are based upon.

Here we will introduce you to why card counting works and dispel some common myths.

Card Counting Myths

Before we begin lets dispel two common myths about card counting:

1. Card counters do not memorize every card they have seen dealt out of a deck or shoe, and card counting does NOT need to be complicated.

In fact, simple systems can be very effective. It is the logic the system is based upon, NOT its complexity that makes a system successful.

2. Card counting also does not allow a player to foresee with certainty what card will be dealt out the deck next.

Card counting is simply a probability theory NOT a predictive theory.

While it puts the odds in your favor longer term, short-term losing periods occur for ALL players, so be prepared!

1. Why card counting works

Players who use correct blackjack strategy with a card counting system can beat the casinos edge.

The reason for this is simple. Low cards favor the dealer in blackjack, and high cards favor the player.

Low cards favor the dealer because they help him make winning totals on his hands when he is stiff, (has a 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 total on his first two cards).

2. Card Counting Your Advantage over the Dealer

In casino blackjack, you can stand on your stiffs if you want to, but the dealer cannot. He has no choice to make but you do, and herein is your advantage.

Rules of the game require that he hit his stiffs no matter how rich the deck is in high cards that will bust him.

It is the fact that you have choices and he does not, which can give you the edge in blackjack.

3. Card Counting Increasing The Odds Of Hitting a Blackjack

The high cards favor the player not only because they may bust the dealer when he hits his stiffs, but because the 10s and Aces create blackjacks.

Although blackjacks are of course, evenly distributed between the dealer and the player, the important fact is that the player is paid more (3:2) when he gets a blackjack.

4. You Don't Need To Count All the Cards

In card counting, you do not have to count the numbers of each of the individual card values in order to know when you have an advantage over the casino.

You only need to know when the deck is rich or poor in high cards i.e the cards favorable to the player.

5. Card Counting - You Have To Act On Your Advantage!

Card counting by itself can reveal when you have an advantage, but to maximize your profits you need to vary your bet size up when you have an advantage and down when you don't.

For card counting, to be effective you need to ACT and capitalize on the situations that are favorable to you.

6. Card Counting Technique Learn It In 5 Minutes!

So how does a blackjack player actually card count?

There are many different techniques; some are difficult to master, while some are easier to learn.

In fact, you can learn a simple effective card counting method in just 5 minutes!

Use Blackjack Basic Strategy to Maximize Your Profits!

Use Blackjack Basic Strategy to Maximize Your Profits!

A blackjack basic strategy cuts the casino edge and most players know this, but what most players do not grasp is that not all casino blackjack games are the same.

Where you play the game, can increase or decrease the effectiveness of your basic strategy dramatically.

Here we will look at blackjack basic strategy and its advantages and how it is affected by favourable and unfavourable rules.

How a Blackjack Basic Strategy Increases Your Odds of Success What does the basic strategy get you in terms of cutting the casino edge in blackjack?

The casino's initial edge in the game is about 5.75%, but by using a blackjack basic strategy, it is possible to reduce the casino edge to around 0.5%. Here is an illustration of how:

Initial casino Advantage 5.75%
Hitting and standing -3.25%
Doubling -1.5%
Pair splitting -0.5%

Casino Advantage with Strategy 0.5%

Increasing Your Advantage Further - Look for Favourable Rules

You can increase your advantage using blackjack basic strategy further by picking a casino with favourable rules, and avoiding those with unfavourable rules.

Here is an overview of the advantages gained in relation to specific rule variations and how player's odds are decreased, or increased.

Favourable Rules to Player

Early surrender +0.62%
Late surrender Single deck +0.02%
Double down after splitting +0.13%
Drawing to split aces +0.14%
Re splitting of aces +0.03%
Double down cards any number +0.20%
2:1 payoff blackjack +2.32%

Unfavourable Rules to Player

no doubling on hard 11 -0.89%
no doubling on hard 10 -0.56%
no doubling on hard 9 -0.14%
no doubling soft hands -0.14%
dealer hits soft 17 -0.20%
dealer takes no hole card -0.13%
2 decks (v single) -0.35%
4 decks (v single -0.51%
6 decks (v single) -0.60%
pairs no re splitting -0.05%

Correct Implementation + Favourable Rules = Optimum Advantage with Blackjack Basic Strategy

Mathematical simulations of millions of hands have shown the effectiveness of the blackjack basic strategy and it is the basis of all card-counting systems.

Many players don't however, play it to its maximum potential, as they don't play with favourable rules. If you don't, you are missing great longer-term profit potential. Don't make the same mistake, play smart and be lucky!

The Eight Blackjack Myths that Lose You Money

the high roller casino @ www.ezboard.com

The Eight Blackjack Myths that Lose You Money
By Stephen Todd Platinum Quality Author

Article Word Count: 527 [View Summary] Comments (0)

If you believe any of the following blackjack myths, you will lose money. Don't make that error!

Myth 1: The aim of blackjack is to get as close to 21 as possible

This is NOT the object of the game. The object is to beat the dealer's hand.

Often, the best strategy is to stand depending on your hand and the dealer's up card. Many people lose a hand because they hit their hands, when according to basic strategy they should stand.

Myth 2: bad players cause you to lose

Other players have no effect on your winning or losing long term.

It is true that stupid plays made by stupid players can affect the outcome of a hand for everyone else, but it can be proved mathematically that it is just as likely that this could result in the entire table winning.

Myth 3: Always take insurance if you have a blackjack

Insurance is the stupidest bet in blackjack. If a person were to take insurance every time that they had a blackjack, then they would be giving up 13 percent of the profit that a blackjack pays.

In order for a player simply to break even with insurance, you would have to guess correctly 1 in 3 times, and there not good odds!

Only if you are card counting should you ever even consider taking insurance.

Myth 4: The dealer is HOT

Mathematically speaking, when you are winning, the deck composition is in your favor, and when you are losing, it is not in your favor.

The dealer has no choices to make; they simply follow the house rules. You as a player do have choices, and it is your choices that determine how successful you will be.

Myth 5: People entering the game in the middle of a shoe can cause you to lose

This is actually the same as a player taking an extra card, or a player leaving in the middle of the game. Neither of which causes you to lose.

Myth 6: You are due a win soon

The dealer has won ten hands consecutively - you will win soon.

The chance of the player winning the next hand is independent of what happened before.

Eventually of course, the number of hands you will win will be around 48%, but this can be over a very long period! In the short term, i.e a single playing session, the previous hands are irrelevant.

Myth 7: The deuce (2) is the most favorable card for the dealer

Not true. We notice the deuce because it makes the dealers hand frequently, because there is only one card that can "bust" the hand, (10), if the total is 12.

Mathematically, players lose more when the "up card" the dealer has is an Ace or a 10.

Myth 8: Don't split 9, 9 against the dealer's 9, you're making two bad hands

When the player has 9 & 9 against the dealer's 9, the player has 18. This doesn't beat 19 as of course we assume that the dealer has a 10 in the hole.

It is proven mathematically a player will lose less money by splitting the 9's than by standing.

Attorney Seeking to Set Up Low-Profit Casinos in NYC Files Action to Invalidate New York's 1821 Prohibition of for-Profit Gambling

NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, New York attorney Carl Person filed an action for declaratory judgment against Governor Pataki, Attorney General Spitzer, New York Lottery, NYS Racing and Wagering Board and others to have the following Article I, Section 9(1) of the New York Constitution declared unconstitutional, to the extent it prohibits for-profit gambling in New York State:

no lottery or the sale of lottery tickets, pool-selling, book-making, or
any other kind of gambling, except lotteries operated by the state and
the sale of lottery tickets in connection therewith as may be authorized
and prescribed by the legislature ... and the legislature shall pass
appropriate laws to prevent offenses against any of the provisions of
this section.

Person states that he would like to establish 100s of places for low- profit neighborhood gambling, offering $2 poker tournaments and bingo games, numbers games, 100% payout slot machines, and other gambling activities for residents in a locality to meet and socialize with neighbors, similar to a neighborhood bar but with low-cost gambling as the draw instead of alcohol, Wi-Fi, coffee or drugs.

Person also seeks the right to buy and use a slot machine for non-gambling purposes. He states, "The ownership and use of a slot machine is currently illegal under New York law, even if I were to own one as a collector, or use it at home without gambling (like an arcade-type game such as Pac-Man)."

This irrationality of New York law led Person into looking at the New York gambling industry. Person saw that it was monopolized by New York State, and various governmental subdivisions, with grants of monopolies to

(1) five Indian tribes (with four more anticipated);
(2) 10 racetrack owners (7 harness and 3 thoroughbred);
(3) 17,000 independent runners/book-makers called "Lottery Agents", who
receive 6% of lottery sales;
(4) local governments that participate in the regional Off-Track Betting
operations throughout NYS;
(5) numerous cruise lines that pick up patrons in New York City for their
casino cruises; and
(6) major corporations, by the failure of NYS to enforce the lottery
prohibition against businesses running promotional lotteries, such as
the major beverage companies' (1 free bottle in 12) to market
billions of dollars worth of their product to New Yorkers, at the
expense of law-abiding competitors.

Person lists many advantages of competition in gambling, including his estimate that the price of gas could go down $1 per gallon if the yearly 33,000,000 visitors to Atlantic City, 25,000,000 customers of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, 10,000,000 patrons of the 5 New York Indian casinos and 100s of millions of other casino patrons in the U.S. could avoid driving 200 miles to visit these casinos, and patronize local gambling venues instead.

A copy of the complaint and Exhibit A (an analysis of New York gambling by Person) can be found at Person's website, http://www.lawmall.com/legalizeNYgambling.

California Tribes Finalize State Gaming Agreements

Big Lagoon Rancheria and Los Coyotes Tribes Moving Forward in Concert with State, Local Leaders

BARSTOW, Calif., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria joined Governor Schwarzenegger today in announcing they have successfully negotiated gaming compacts.

The agreements allow the tribes to proceed with jointly developing a $160 million casino resort complex in Barstow. Within the proposed 47-acre complex, each tribe will own and operate an individual casino facility. The compacts also specify how associated revenues and infrastructure costs will be fairly distributed among the tribes, the State, and local government.

"This agreement represents a giant step forward for the Barstow project that will help make our people self-sufficient," said Virgil Moorehead, Big Lagoon Rancheria Tribal Chairman. "We deeply appreciate the hard work and support of Governor Schwarzenegger and his lead negotiator, Dan Kolkey. Their commitment to balancing the unique needs of our tribes and the people of California is commendable. We also thank the City of Barstow for their continuing support."

Some specific highlights of the compacts include:

-- The State will receive from 16% to 25% of the net win on slot machines and card games based on a sliding scale.

-- The tribes will be limited to operating a maximum of 2,250 gaming devices; each tribe expects to open with approximately 1,250 gaming devices.

-- The tribes will adhere to federal and state workplace standards for casino workers.

-- The compacts include provisions to address the issue of problem gambling.

-- The compacts expire on December 31, 2025.

The compacts are one of the first in the state following the Governor's May 2005 proclamation on tribal gaming, which allow for an off-reservation casino in a non-urban area when a greater state purpose is being served. The signing follows a ten-year effort by the Big Lagoon tribe to negotiate a compact. As part of the agreement, tribe members agree not to commercially develop their traditional reservation property located in coastal Humboldt County.

"We are extremely pleased to have emerged from these negotiations with an agreement that is solid, fair, and workable," said Katherine Siva Saubel, Tribal Spokeswoman for the Los Coyotes Band. "We can now begin to move forward with our enterprise, which will help provide tribal members with greater financial stability and self-reliance. These compacts are certainly a win-win-win for the tribes, the State and the community of Barstow."

The Los Coyotes have also agreed to forgo development of a casino gaming facility on their reservation property in San Diego County. As a result, both tribes will have the opportunity to benefit from the economic development opportunity allowed to other tribes in the state, but they will do so in a way that helps to consolidate the number of locations in which Indian gaming will be permitted in the state.

"We would also like to thank Mayor Lawrence Dale, the Barstow City Council, past and present, and the thousands of Barstow residents who signed cards to the Governor supporting the project," said Los Coyotes Council Member, Kevin Siva. "Their support was our strength in these negotiations."

Now that the compacts have been signed by the Governor, the tribes will go to the State legislature for approval. Each tribe is also applying to the Department of Interior to request that its portion of the land be taken into trust. Construction can begin once the applications have been approved.

The proposed Barstow Casinos and Resort will be a unique project integrating two separate casinos within one casino resort complex. Each casino will contain similar square footage and be joined together by a common area. The complex, which will provide visitors with double the gaming and resort options, features hotels, pools, spa/exercise facilities, restaurants, retail, entertainment and administrative offices. Uniquely positioned midway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, it is expected to attract more than 2.5 million visitors per year. The complex will provide 3,700 jobs, including 1,500 casino positions and 1,000 construction jobs.

"The City of Barstow is the ideal location for this project. City leaders and residents have expressed a strong desire to host a responsible tribal gaming project because it will create good-paying jobs and drive economic development," added Moorehead, Big Lagoon's tribal leader. "We're confident our project will meet and exceed the expectations of the Barstow community."

The Big Lagoon Rancheria was established in 1918. The tribe's members are descended from the Tolowa and Yurok Tribes. The reservation of the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians reservation was formally established in 1889. Both tribes are federally-recognized.

This release, a project overview, tribal background information and site renderings are available at http://www.mrgmi.com/ . Highlights of the compacts are available on Governor Schwarzenegger's website at http://www.governor.ca.gov/state/govsite/gov_pressroom_main.jsp

aunch of New Online Service Focusing On the Privatization of State-Controlled Gambling Companies

aunch of New Online Service Focusing On the Privatization of State-Controlled Gambling Companies

New Website of MECN and Rob van der Gaast features regular updates on the privatisation of state-controlled gambling companies.

London/Munich (PRWEB) September 9, 2005 -- As MECN’s study ”Privatization of state-controlled gambling operators” was met with such a positive response upon publication, the coauthors decided to create a special online site offering more information on the subject: www.gambling-privatisation.com

For a long time now, both the consulting firm MECN and the gambling research analyst Rob van der Gaast have received frequent inquiries regarding the current status of privatization in the gambling industry. The successful listing on the stock exchange of the privatized OPAP as well as planned privatizations, such as those in Great Britain, Germany, and Turkey, are increasingly drawing the attention of the whole industry.

The current study “Privatization of state-controlled gambling operators” (available at www.privatisation.mecn.net) was a first step toward filling the great need for information. The new informational website now complements the study, and Martin Oelbermann, director of MECN, adds ”The new site offers an overview of current developments and detailed analyses of the most important issues“.

The Website is accessible free of charge at www.gambling-privatisation.com and is supplemented by a newsletter.

About MECN:
MECN is a network of experts on issues concerning the media and entertainment industry. Together they provide in-depth knowledge, analysis, and advice to global clients.

Yes I Can' Attitude Fosters Great Casino Customer Service

A "yes I can" attitude is essential at casinos that want to provide stellar customer service.

(PRWEB) September 9, 2005 -- A "yes I can" attitude is essential at casinos that want to provide stellar customer service.

"It doesn't matter if what the guest wants is technically outside an employee's area of responsibility," says Martin R. Baird, chief executive officer of Annapolis, Md.-based Robinson & Associates, Inc., a global customer service consulting firm for the gaming industry. "That employee should come through for the guest."

Baird's new book, "Gaming Guest Service from A to Z" uses the alphabet to explore important words to help gaming executives, managers and employees understand how critically important outstanding customer service is and how to provide it. The book has all the letters of the alphabet and each letter has a series of words that give insight on how to provide great customer service.

The following are helpful tips excerpted from the book's section on the letter Y.

Yes I Can. No matter what a guest wants, no matter when they want it and no matter which department is responsible, you need to have a "yes I can" attitude. Sure, the request may be outside your area of expertise and it may have nothing to do with your department, but you need to come through for your guest with a cheerful, "Yes, I can do that." If you believe you can do anything for that guest, it will happen. And your guest will remember and appreciate your effort. So remember: yes I can.

Yowza! If your guests had such a wonderful time at your property that they had to make up a word to describe their feelings, yowza would be ideal. "This was amazing. I can't believe it. Yowza!" If you hear a guest say that, you've done your job and you might feel like yelling yowza, too.

Digital Dynamics to Exhibit New Products For Gaming Communication Protocol Development at the Global Gaming Expo

Digital Dynamics to Exhibit New Products For Gaming Communication Protocol Development at the Global Gaming Expo

New tools for developing slot communications using the GSA's BOB and S2S open standards.

(PRWEB) September 10, 2005 -- Digital Dynamics Software Inc., an industry leader and expert with gaming communication protocols, will exhibit new gaming development product offerings at the 2005 Global Gaming Expo, September 13-15 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. In the Gaming Standards Association's exhibit, Booth #3691, Digital Dynamics will showcase an innovative BOB to SAS protocol converter and new development tools for the BOB and S2S communication protocols.

Digital Dynamics is well known for its expertise with gaming communication protocols and was a special industry consultant to the GSA in developing the BOB protocol reference implementation. Digital Dynamics created the first BOB EGM simulator designed to aid GSA members in learning and implementing the new BOB slot communication open standard.

The new BOB to SAS protocol converter will enable casinos to quickly leverage all the advantages of the new BOB slot communication standard without having to replace their existing technology running legacy slot accounting communication protocols. The protocol converter acts as a SMIB (smart interface board) to transparently convert gaming communications between a slot machine running SAS and a BOB host server controlling the gaming floor. “Our BOB to SAS protocol converter will enable casinos to quickly integrate and utilize innovative technology into their existing slot floor without requiring the radical wholesale replacement of slot machines they already own.” says Tony Antonucci, president of Digital Dynamics.

For gaming manufacturers developing gaming products using the new Best of Breed (BOB) and System to System (S2S) open standards, Digital Dynamics is demonstrating new data scopes to greatly facilitate software and protocol communication development. The data scopes enable developers to easily capture and analyze the following protocol communication layers: TCP/IP, HTTP, SOAP, and S2S/BOB. The data scopes help engineers easily view and dissect all the communications traffic on the slot floor network. The data display can be refined with filters to focus only on specific data that is desired to be reviewed and analyzed.

The message builder tools for the BOB and S2S communication protocols helps software developers quickly construct and validate gaming communications messages to ensure compliance with the GSA's open standard protocol specifications. Developers can use the point and click message building interface to create a BOB or S2S message and send it to the desired recipient. Combined with the data scopes, developers will have incredibly useful tools to facilitate their BOB and S2S software development and protocol compliance testing.

Digital Dynamics is a technology company with headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois. The company offers training, professional consulting services, and secure products for industries requiring reliable and secure enterprise class technology solutions with advanced design. Additional information about the company can be found at www.digdyn.com.

“I know many people - some are friends and some are just suckers - that believe that if they play once a week, or two-three times a week, they will eventually become as good as the professional poker players on ESPN,” Maldini said. “Listen, you can practice all you want. But if you're practicing the wrong techniques, you're only implanting terrible decisions, plays, and losing poker on your brain.”

Players who read Maldini’s book will learn, among other things: how to win the most from your opponents when your hand is tops; when to never fold your hand - even if at first you don't think you can win; an amazing truth that proves a straight is sometimes more valuable than a flush; the secret to getting other players to fold their drawing hands after the turn; the professional's secret to catching a player when they try and bluff you out of a pot; how to play mind games with the players who are better than you; how to take down pots without a hand; the secret to using your chip stack and dealer position as weapons in a No Limit game; what the pros do when a player has caught on to their strategy; how to deceive your opponents by the bets you make; how to bet your hand before the flop like a pro; how to spot a cheat before he takes off with your money; 10 basic tells you will see at your next poker game; and much, much more.

“I carefully crafted this guide to contain everything a poker player needs to know to be successful,” Maldini said. “Readers get 80 dense pages of tips, tricks, and tactics. Each page is full of winning strategies that will steadily increase a player’s edge over the competition. Any player who reads this guide, even beginners, will soon be a walking, talking Bellagio casino.”

Essex Grandmother Wins £200,000 with a 40 pence Bet at Coral.co.uk

Essex Grandmother Wins £200,000 with a 40 pence Bet at Coral.co.uk

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Sixty-four year old Grandmother, Rita Driscoll, from South Ockendon in Essex, has won a £196,000 jackpot after betting just 40 pence via her computer on an online fruit machine run by coral.co.uk.

(PRWEB) September 11, 2005 -- Rita, a retired-post office worker, first visited the online casino at ww.coralcasino.com over eighteen months ago. She started by playing for fun with fake money, before depositing cash to bet with.

On Thursday night, after her husband and her son had already gone to bed, Rita logged on to her computer, went to coralcasino.com and decided to bet on a slot machine for half an hour. Within ten minutes, with just 40 pence at stake, she hit the jackpot and landed the £196,000 prize.

"I always play the slot machines when we go to a casino when on holiday in Portugal and started using this online casino because it's just as much fun to play," explained Rita Driscoll.

"My husband always says that I have 'lucky hands' but my biggest win till now was just £1,300 at Bingo. I was shaking when I realised how much I'd won. We are going on holiday to celebrate and I'm going to look after all my family with the winnings," added Mrs Driscoll.

This is the biggest ever payout by Coral for an online bet and reflects the growing popularity of online casinos and online poker.

"This is a record breaking payout by Coral for a bet placed on a computer but it couldn't have happened to a nicer lady," said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.

"It may be a virtual slot machine at a virtual casino, but there is nothing virtual about the £196,000," added Clare.

Celebpoker.com Online Qualifier Martin Green Scoops Second Place for Only $4 at the Star City Celebpoker.com Grand Prix, £100,000 Guaranteed First Prize

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Celebpoker.com pulls off another fantastic poker event at Star City Casino, Birmingham! Celebpoker.com flew in Hollywood actor and well known poker player Lou Diamond Phillips to add to the prestigious event.

(PRWEB) September 11, 2005 -- They came from across the globe, all chasing the big pot. Online qualifiers a-plenty, from as far as the US, Sweden and France. Some had bought in for as little as $4.00. Others had played the network of satellites across the network of Stanley casinos in England and Scotland.

GeorgeGeary1.jpg

Showgirls paraded their feathers in the Vegas-style atmosphere. The red carpet was rolled out to receive the galaxy of stars. The poker-loving public joined the celebrities, everyone wanted to be a winner but dreams are made and broken in star city.

There were also a host of top pro players including:
Simon “Aces” Trumper
Surrinder Surinam
Willie Tann
Bambos Charambolous
Julian Thew
In addition there was a host of top celebrity players from Hollywood to the green baize of snooker!

Lou “Diamond” Phillips, star of La Bamba and Young Guns

Ryder Cup winning captain, Sam Torrance
7 time world snooker champion Stephen Hendry
Peoples champion, Jimmy White
Former Eastender Michael Greco, fresh from his second place finish in Portugal
World snooker champion Mark Williams
Former England cricketer Ed Giddins
Scott Robinson, part of the biggest boyband in the World 5IVE, currently starring in Boogie Nights2

Day 1
190 players sat down. Play was fierce and combative. Aggression showed, nerves were fraught.

Bad beats rippled around the casino, did that really just happen to me! Pocket kings being taken out by a royal flush.

Jimmy White, Simon Trumper and Surrinder were among the early fallers.

Next out was Scott Robinson- why did he slow play the pocket rockets?

No big place finish for Bambos. Michael Greco “I just didn't get the cards” followed soon after. The numbers were crashing the tension was growing. Next out was “The Real Deal” Mark Williams. Then in a flash his great friend Stephen Hendry was gone. Were any of the celebrities going to make day 2?

By 1am we were down to 60 players. 3 celebrities remained. Tournament Director, Thomas Kremzer called final hand of day 1 at 1.55am, Lou “Diamond” Phillips has pocket 8's and calls all-in, trying to double up for day 2. He gets called with pocket 10's and bang – he's gone, back across the Pond.

Day 2
Only 2 celebrities remained, Ed Giddins and Sam Torrance, part of the 45 players remaining for day 2.

Play re-commenced at 4pm, by 4.30 we are down to 33 players and Sam Torrance has double-bogeyed and missed the cut!

Ed Giddins is the only Celebpoker.com celebrity player left, very much short stacked but playing a tight game with patience his only friend.

Miraculously it's 9.30pm and we're down to the final 9.

Dan Brown 475,000
Martin Green 422,000
Julian Thew 267,000
George Geary 187,000
Alastair Findlay 158,000
Aaron Routt 126,000
Sean Sharam 82,000
Ed Giddins 67,500
Barry Neville 40,000
Who would make the final 6, the main televised event and win the guaranteed £100,000 first prize? Would it be satellite qualifier Dan Brown, online qualifier Martin Green from Brighton or former cricketer Ed Giddins from Eastbourne?

The final 6
Martin Green 753400
Daniel Brown 453800
Julian Thew 266000
George Geary 161810
Alistair Findlay 159800
Ed Giddins 34700
Not unsurprisingly Ed Giddins was the first to leave the televised table. Ed had A8 offsuit and called all-in. Martin Green called, then Alistair Findlay came over the top with an all-in raise. Martin folded. Alistair had pocket cowboys, which held up, Ed was gone.

Next out and 5th place finisher was Daniel Brown who lost to Martin Green.

Next big action was between Julian Thew who pushed all-in with Queen 5. Martin Green called with Ace King again this held up.

Julian Thew finished in 4th and collected £7,200.

The action was now coming thick and fast. Alistair Findlay pushing all-in with Ace 6. Martin Green called with Ace 9. Nothing came on the board and Alistair was 3rd place finisher and collected £14,400.

Heads up action and Martin Green is massive chip leader with 1,700,000 chips against George Geary's 161,000.

There followed prolonged sparring and chips moved across the board at a fantastic pace. George doubled up twice with 2 fantastic river cards. Martin scratched his head, what did he have to do to beat this guy?

An hour of heads-up and the chips are level – it really is wide open. The tension is electric.

Two hours later, heads-up action has never been so tense, and Martin loses out with his straight to George's flush draw on the river. It doesn't get any better than this.

Martin is now down to 60,000 chips and George is holding the huge stack.

Martin is forced to go all-in time after time. Eventually George wins with 2 pairs to Martin's pair. What a win. If ever there was an example of how to play heads up, George has shown the way.

Martin wins £28,800 and George the massive first prize of £100,000.

Watch www.celebpoker.com for further details of when this fantastic play will be aired.

Pacific Poker gives players the only no BS $100 new player bonus.

Pacific Poker gives players the only no BS $100 new player bonus.

(PRWEB) September 9, 2005 -- Online poker players say Pacific Poker 888 (www.PacificPoker100.com) gives new players up to $100 with no BS. Pacific Poker players say they give this bonus instantly upon opening up a new account. Players say other poker rooms require up to 1400 raked hands before the bonus is released.

Pacific Poker 888 says they offers this free $100 to get players accustomed to their online poker room before having to risk their own money. Pacific Poker 888 is one of the only sites that offer this up front bonus.

This Pacific Poker 888 room does not offer players free roll tournaments. Many Pacific Poker players say they didn’t mind because they got their bonus up front unlike the other poker rooms that have a lot of raked hand requirements before they got their free money.

The only requirement that Pacific Poker 888 players said they found was that Pacific Poker does not allow you to instantly cash out the bonus. Pacific Poker 888 (www.PacificPoker100.com) makes you play with the bonus money.

Many Pacific Poker players said they really liked the $30k guaranteed tournament that Pacific Poker holds every day. They say the buy in is $30 and you can win on average of $5k.

Pacific Poker 888 recently announced that they have updated their software. Pacific now allows players to play multiple tables at once. Pacific Poker announced that their poker software is mac online poker compatible at (www.Mac-PacificPoker.com)

One of the reasons Pacific Poker 888 decided to offer this no download mac compatible software is because the market for mac users is 4.4% which comes out to almost $500 million in market share of mac users not capable to play at Pacific Poker 888 (www.PacificPoker100.com) previously.

Poker Mavens 1.0

Briggs Softworks announces the release of Poker Mavens 1.0, an Internet-based poker software game for Windows. Poker Mavens allows friends and family to play against each other in a private game of Texas Hold'em poker from anywhere in the world, for fun and practice.

Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 8, 2005 -- Briggs Softworks announces the release of Poker Mavens 1.0, an Internet-based poker software game for Windows. Poker Mavens allows friends and family to play against each other in a private game of Texas Hold'em poker from anywhere in the world, for fun and practice.

Up to nine people can play in a single table tournament, using a graphical interface that displays the table, cards, chips, and player avatars. All three Hold'em variations (limit, pot limit, and no limit) are supported. A built-in chat system lets players communicate with each other, IM-style.

PinnacleSports.com Reduces The Juice To -104 On All NFL Sides

Leading Reduced Margin Sportsbook Gives Players Even More Value On NFL Bets

(PRWEB) August 8, 2005 -- With the official kick-off to the 2005 NFL season next week, PinnacleSports.com is giving NFL bettors more bang for their buck by reducing the juice on all NFL sides using an industry first -104 pricing model. While traditional bookmakers use a -110 pricing model that charges bettors 10 percent to place a wager, PinnacleSports.com now offers players up to 60 percent better value on NFL sides for the entire 2005 season.

Instead of paying $110 to win $100 on the Patriots versus the Raiders in the NFL season opener, customers only have to lay $104 to win $100 at PinnacleSports.com. Using this model, although a player would stand to win the same amount, someone who places five $200 bets a week for all 17 weeks of the NFL season would save an astounding $1,020 wagering at PinnacleSports.com instead of at a traditional sportsbook. While other sportsbooks only offer customers one-time sign-up bonuses of 10-20 percent with restrictive terms and conditions, PinnacleSports.com customers enjoy savings year round on all sports through the company's reduced margin wagering. In addition, unlike betting exchanges PinnacleSports.com never charges a commission on winning bets.

“As the first gaming company in the world to introduce reduced margin sports wagering, we are committed to giving our customers the absolute best value on their bets during the upcoming NFL season,” said Simon Noble of PinnacleSports.com. “While other companies have tried to replicate our success by offering a lower pricing model on certain days, we remain the only sportsbook that offers reduced juice wagering all day every day. We've earned an industry-leading reputation for offering the bettors the best value while taking all players and bets – we never deal dual lines, ban winners, or post lines only a few hours before games start and never will.”

In addition to providing consistent value to bettors, PinnacleSports.com also offers the Internet's lowest minimum and highest maximum bet limits. For the upcoming football season players can wager between as little as $1 and as much as $30,000 on NFL sides.

All the Important Things in Life: Money, Love, Football and Beer

The 2005 National Football Season is just about to start and "Over Time," a fast-paced new thriller from Brian Hill and Dee Power will be kicking off in Chicago that same weekend, September 10-11th at the Midwest Literary Festival, www.midwestliteraryfestival.com. Come meet the authors.

(PRWEB) September 2, 2005 -- The 2005 National Football Season is just about to start and "Over Time," a fast-paced new thriller from Brian Hill and Dee Power will be kicking off in Chicago that same weekend, September 10-11 th at the Midwest Literary Festival, www.midwestliteraryfestival.com. Come meet the authors.

The drama of high finance, hostile takeovers and vicious venture capitalists is interwoven with an emotionally engaging, nostalgic football story about friendships that last forever. It isn't often that professional football is the subject of a work of fiction, and unfortunately rarer still when the players are presented in a positive light. Golfers have "The Legend of Bagger Vance," baseball fans have "Field of Dreams." Now NFL fans have a thrilling story they can call their own, "Over Time."

Time is running out for Dan to save the business that took his family sixty years to build. Kelly's lifework crumbles around her. Mike thinks he'll always be the guy watching the world from the sidelines. Mark dies just when his dream of playing football for the Green Bay Packers seemed within reach.

Then a letter lost for twenty years arrives and sends the game of life into overtime.

It all comes down to a desperate financial gamble, a football game for the ages, and the emotional reunion of four college friends who could not be separated by time, distance, or even death.

With warmth, suspense, humor, memorable characters and a realistic depiction of the world of high finance and a love of professional football, Over Time will score a touchdown with football fans.

Advance Reading Copies are available

Poker Majors is the world's first totally automated service which tracks guaranteed online poker tournaments from all of the major poker rooms.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) September 5, 2005 -- Among the many weapons available to the vast amount of online poker rooms which are currently battling for the attention of the world's poker fans one of the most popular is guaranteed tournaments. These are tournaments with varying buy-in but which have two things in common. First of all they are as most live as well as internet tournaments played with no-limit Texas Hold 'em, and second of all they have a guaranteed minimum prize pool regardless of the number of entrants with the biggest ones boasting over $1,000,000.

Up until now it has been difficult to say the least to compare the various offers available and get a good overview of which poker room is organizing what, but now the new service Poker Majors has opened to step up to the task. Boasting a minimum of $800,000 in total prize money per day this new service tracks all tournaments with an at least $5,000 guaranteed prize pool from the major online poker rooms.

The tournaments are searchable by buy-in, guaranteed prize pool as well as poker room and has the start times available in all time zones of the world.

Founder Martin Dabrowski commented the launch as follows: "Poker is growing at such an extent that it's getting increasingly difficult to keep up with all the bonuses, offers and tournaments. We hope to at least be a part of helping to sort out this "mess" with the $800,000 worth of tournaments we track on a daily basis. This of course grows to more than double that amount on the always tournament heavy Sundays and even more so on the last Sunday of the month which most poker rooms usually save their biggest events for."

About Poker Majors

the high roller casino @ www.ezboard.com

(PRWEB) Sept. 1, 2005 -- Pacific Poker (www.PacificPoker100.com) announced that they will give new users up to $100 before they even play a single hand. They say they are the only no haggle online poker bonus.

The reason Pacific does this is to let new players get accustomed to their software and the online poker world. The only catch to this bonus is that players must be new to Pacific and must play with the bonus money given to them. They do not allow players to immediately cash out their bonus. They do this to prevent fraud.

Pacific Poker also announced that their software will be fully Mac compatible at (www.Mac-PacificPoker.com) which gives Mac users a chance to use their no download quick play version. This keeps players from having to buy expensive Virtual PC software.

Pacific Poker says most of their players are from the UK and the USA but they hope to increase their market impact into more countries. They have seen dramatic increases in revenues from their expansion into the Mac niche market as well.

This poker room has a poker school as also. They offer advice for new and experienced players at their home page under the Poker School link. Their mascot for the poker school is the Tucan and can be seen at www.PacificPoker100.com

$7,000 MSN search engine contest is being launched

Nicosia, Cyprus (PRWEB) September 2, 2005 -- The rising stars of online marketing are no longer just professionals with post-graduate degrees, but programmers and webmasters with the knowledge and know-how to optimize a site's ranking on key-word search engines.

It's with this in mind that the renowned www.BeTheDealer.com has launched its second Search Engine Optimization contest for the web's best and brightest Engine Crackers - www.btdino.com

The $7,000 MSN Search Engine contest format is simple. Webmasters are asked to optimize their sites for the phrase "Online Casino BTDino," a search that currently yields no results. On February 26th, 2006, the webmasters who successfully crack the top 50 listings for this phrase will share in the $7,000 prize.

Earlier this year, BeTheDealer Casino sponsored the Google Fortuno Winnero Optimization Contest, in which hundreds of webmasters took part, generating over 132,000 (and counting) results for the phrase "Fortuno Winnero."

"SEO is one of the most powerful ways to promote products online," said Shmuel Ephron, CEO of BeTheDealer. "Our hope is to create an exciting and innovative opportunity for those with the ingenuity to operate these powerful tools."

While Google is currently the undisputed search engine leader, Microsoft's MSN Search is growing in popularity, and according to CEO Steve Balmer, will overtake Google in the not-too-distant future.

Leon Brodsky, CTO of BeTheDealer Casino and competition manager concurs. "With Fortuno Winnero, BeTheDealer discovered the internet's greatest Googler's. With BTDino, we'll uncover the world's best MSNer's."

For more information, visit: www.btdino.com or www.bethedealer.com

Developed and owned by CV On Net, BeTheDealer's proprietary P2P software is protected by patent in the United States and a pending patent filed both in Europe. Operational since 2002, BeTheDealer is the only casino available that allows players to log on as the dealer and play directly against other users in a P2P environment. Bell Gardens (PRWEB) September 2, 2005 -- Ladies will have the opportunity to show their stuff in the WPT Ladies Night Out Invitational that will be shown on the Travel Channel, and the Bicycle Casino hosted a No-Limit Hold'em Ladies Poker Party on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:15p.m. The winner of this $100+$20 tournament will go on to compete with some of the biggest names in ladies poker history at the WPT Ladies Invitational on Thursday, September 1st.

The Bicycle Casino's Legends of Poker, one of the most prestigious tournament series on the circuit today, began earlier this month with thousands of tournament players descending on Bell Gardens! With an estimated prize pool of over $7,000,000, including $600,000 in guaranteed prize money in five different events and the unprecedented "Poker fever" that is sweeping the country, this year's tournament is turning into one of the largest poker tournaments in the history of The Bicycle Casino! The first place winner of this year's, now "famous" No-Limit Hold'em Championship event will take home more than $1,000,000! Cassava Readies for Float

Compared to June's overwhelmingly lucrative Party Gaming IPO, the upcoming stock market debut of online poker and casino operator Cassava Enterprises is a considerably more modest offering. Cassava, which owns online casinos 888.com and Casino on Net, as well as online poker room Pacific Poker, is expected to issue its prospectus early next month.

Since its float, shares for Online poker company Party Gaming have grown 38 percent. Party Gaming's performance blew away the expectations of more pessimistic analysts, who thought that the legal complications attached to online gambling would make this a disappointing investment. The same suspicions are surrounding Cassava's impending float.

Cassava's offering is expected to be at a substantial discount to that of Party Gaming, with the float valuation estimated at £700m. One of the reason's for Cassava's lower float price is its size, namely that the company is much smaller than Party Gaming, although Cassava's 888.com commands the largest player base of any online casino.

Secondly, online poker growth is much faster than the growth of general online casinos. Thus, Party Gaming's online poker focus helped raise its value. Cassava, on the other hand, deals more in casinos than poker, and thus was more modestly valuated.

At the final table of this year's World Series of Poker, the media consensus was that there was only one pro at the table: Mike Matusow. We've since learned that this year's champ, Joseph Hachem, gave up a 13-year chiropractic career three years ago to play poker for a living. The other seven players at the final table won over a million dollars each. It's a safe bet that a few of them now consider themselves poker professionals. What does that mean?

Three Myths About Playing Poker Professionally

Myth #1: Either I'm a Pro or I'm Not

Consider the following players. Which ones are pros and which are amateurs?

Adam

Adam plays the tournament trail full-time. He's up thousands one month, and broke the next. He's always borrowing money from fellow poker players. He has no life outside the poker world and constantly thinks, "I wish I had some skills and experience that would allow me to get a normal job."

Betty

By day, Betty's an accountant making $50K a year. She plays poker in her spare time. Some years she earns $20K playing poker, other years she earns $100K. She rarely has a losing year.

Charlie

Charlie picked up the game a year ago, entered his first tournament - the prestigious "WPT London" - and won it with flair and showmanship. He netted $500K and got a ton of TV coverage. He blew through $350K in the next 11 months playing every big event with no cash finishes. He's still got a bankroll, thanks to some juicy endorsement contracts from an online site and a beer company that guarantee him $1 Million a year for the next three years. All he has to do is continue to play in every major tournament and endorse their products.

Debbie

Debbie has a bankroll of $500K, She makes (or loses) anywhere from -$50K to +$200K per year playing a very erratic schedule. That schedule is structured around the good games, whether they're offline, online or on the tourney trail. She travels to far-off lands whenever she feels like it, and has plans to settle down and start a family. Someday. But not now.

Lessons From the Pros

Eddie

Eddie only plays online, He clocks in, plays exactly eight hours a day, five days a week, at four simultaneous tables no higher than $5-$10 limit hold 'em. He earns a surprisingly consistent $100/hr, takes the family on vacation twice a year, plays tennis, and attends opera on the weekends.

Myth #2: I Would be so Much Happier if I Could Just Play Poker Full Time

TRUE: It's fun playing an hour or two each day.

BUT: It might not be so fun playing all the time to the exclusion of other interests, family and friends.

TRUE: It's low-stress and entertaining, playing as a hobby.

BUT: It might be very stressful if you have to grind it out to pay the bills every month.

TRUE: Those big tourney winners on TV live like rock stars.

BUT: What about the other 99% of the players you don't see, all of whom are competing for your dream.

Myth #3: I Don't Need a Big Bankroll to be a Pro

Check the long list of Former World Champions who have gone a full year without making the final table of a major event. As of this writing, it takes roughly $500K to enter all the major tournaments in a year.

Ask your favorite pro how many times he or she has gone bust in their career, or how many times they have been hit up for a sizable cash loan from one of their good friends.

Poker is a great game; it's tons of fun, and it has never been as potentially profitable as it is today. But try to keep it in perspective.

Poker doesn't have to consume your life. You can make a good chunk of change playing poker, and you can do it without giving up all the good things you have going in your life.

Financially, mentally and socially, you are better off making poker fit into your life rather than the other way around.

Getting back to the players in the introduction, it's clear that Eddie is a pro. And it's equally clear (to me anyway) that Adam is definitely not, even though he thinks he is, and so does the general public. Adam is a dime a dozen in the poker world. You've even seen him and his ilk on TV a number of times. As for the other three, I don't know whether I'd call them pros or not, but I sure wouldn't mind being in their shoes.

"Professional" is just a word. Being a professional poker player is not the same thing as being a successful poker player.

Bottom line: You don't need to be a professional to be a poker champion.

One of the most important poker lessons has nothing to do with how to play Aces in late position or how to adjust for the maniac in seat three. It's how to manage your money in a way that will make it grow as quickly as possible with minimal risk.

Some of the most highly skilled players in the game have gone broke (repeatedly) simply because they played too high, too fast, too often. How can we make sure this problem never happens to us? It isn't a matter of smarts, but rather, one of discipline.

The most important step is to be honest with yourself. You should know your relative skill level at all times. Suppose you're a $1/$2 No-Limit Hold 'em player who's had a great night, and you're toying with taking a shot at the $5/$10 game. Your bankroll is up to $1,500, but you would need to bring at least $500 to the table in order to play comfortably at the higher level.

Why would you risk putting a third of your bankroll on the table to play in the $5/$10 game? For starters, your bankroll isn't big enough for the stake; more importantly, you also need to consider that the skill level of the $5/$10 players is greater than the competition you're used to. (That's not always true, of course. There are some very skilled $1/$2 players and some weak $5/$10 players, but it's not unreasonable to assume that the higher-level games are filled with better players.)

This is where self-control comes in. One slip-up can spell disaster for a bankroll, and watching six months of hard work disappear in six hours of foolish play is enough to crush anyone's spirits.

Lessons From the Pros

The safest course of action is to continue doing what you're doing. You're beating the $1/$2 game for a tidy profit every week - stay right where you are. Continue proving that you can beat the game. While you're doing that, your bankroll should grow accordingly. Beating a game for six days is proof of very little. Beating the same game for six months is better evidence that you are a winning player.

Start tracking your results. You can buy tracking software or easily create a database of your own. Put in all of your information after each time you play - limits, time at the tables, profits/losses. Go over your information every few weeks, both for your recent play and for your entire poker lifetime. Try to spot bad trends before they get out of hand. If you've been playing well at a certain level over a long period of time, only then should you consider moving up to the next highest level.

Above all, know where your money is at all times and how it is being used. Ask yourself, "Is this too much risk for me considering my current bankroll?" If the answer is yes, do the responsible thing and change tables. Months later, you'll be thankful you did.

I never get tired of saying it: If you're the first to enter the pot in a No-Limit Hold 'em game, never call. If you aren't prepared to raise, throw your hand away.

Why, you ask? Simple. By raising, you put pressure on the blinds and the other players at the table, making them consider just how strong their hands really are. Chances are that by raising, you'll force marginal hands to fold before you even see the flop, limiting the number of players you have to beat through the rest of the hand.

OK, with that out of the way, the next obvious question becomes: How much should I raise?

To that, I say; it depends. First off, you shouldn't allow the strength of your hand effect the size of your raise. A tough poker game is like real estate. The three most important factors in deciding how much to raise are: Location, location, location.

You always want to make your opponents' decisions as difficult as possible. In choosing the size of your raise, you want to give the big blind a tough decision between calling or folding if the rest of the table folds around to him.

Raising from early position is to advertise a very strong hand - one that can beat the seven or more other players who still have to act. Since you are representing such strength, it doesn't take much of a raise to convince the big blind to fold. Also, since your hand is so strong, you actually don't mind a call from the big blind anyway. The real reason for a small raise is that you have so many players acting after you, any of whom might wake up with a monster and re-raise you.

Lessons From the Pros

When you raise in late position, you're representing a hand that can beat the two or three remaining hands. This gives you a lot more freedom to raise with marginal hands, but your raise must be bigger or the big blind can call too easily. Another reason to raise more from late position is that you're trying to put pressure on the big blind to fold, not call and, more importantly, you don't have as many remaining opponents who can re-raise you.

One of the most common mistakes in No-Limit Hold 'em is coming in for a raise that's too big. In early position, you want to keep your raises at about two times the big blind. With four to six players to act behind you when you're in middle position, raise to about two and a half big blinds, and raise to about three times the big blind from late position.

If you're representing a big hand by raising from early position, it stands to reason that you'll only get played with by huge hands. Why risk four, five or more bets to win only one and a half bets in the blinds when you're often going to be running into monsters along the way? If you're holding A-Q rather than A-A and a player comes over the top, you can lay it down without having risked much.

Some beginners raise more with their strongest hands to build a bigger pot or raise less with these monsters to get more action. Instead, I recommend that you play your starting hands the same way no matter what you have. With A-A or A-J, raise the same amount so you're not telegraphing the strength of your hand to watchful opponents. An exception would be if you know your opponents aren't paying attention and you feel sure that you can manipulate them.

These numbers need to be modified if there are antes. You should generally add about half the total antes to any raise. Your early position raise should be two big blinds plus half the total antes, and three big blinds plus half the antes for your late-position raises.

There are many loose live games these days. If you find yourself in one of these games and you can't steal the blinds with a normal raise, tighten up your starting requirements slightly and make larger raises. If this raise still can't take the blinds, don't tighten up anymore, but choose to raise an amount that you expect to get called once or twice behind you. Since your opponents are playing too loose, take advantage of it by building bigger pots when you think you're getting the best of it.

The last exception is when you're short-stacked. If making your typical raise means putting over a quarter of your stack in the pot, just go ahead and move all in instead. Betting a quarter of your stack before the flop commits you to calling just about any re-raise or, at the very least, it gives you a very tough decision. Moving all in here instead of raising less forces the tough decision on your opponents and eliminates one of your tough calling decisions. All of which brings us back to my first principle: Avoid being the one to just call.

I get asked a lot of poker strategy questions, from beginner to advanced. Some are easy, but some involve the kind of math I can't always do off the top of my head. When that happens, I rely on one of a number of free tools to calculate the probability of winning the hand.

Here's an example based on a hand posted on a website I run:

Our hero was playing at a small stakes No-Limit table online, with $.25-$.50 blinds. At the start of the hand, he had $44. He was dealt Ad-Td and raised to $2. Both blinds called. The flop was Kd-Jd-2c, giving our hero a royal flush draw. The big blind bet $2, hero raised $2 more, the next player called, and the big blind (with more chips than our hero) re-raised all-in.

Should our hero call with his last $38? Let's assume the third player will fold. If our hero were to call and win, he'd be up to $94 (the $18 in the pot, plus his $38 and his opponent's $38). If he wins the hand four times out of 10, on the average he'd have $37.60 after the hand ($94 multiplied by four, and divided by 10). In poker, it's the long run that matters, so he should only call if his probability of winning is greater than 40%. Now he needs to figure out the probability he'd win the hand.

The first step is to put his opponent on a range of hands. Sometimes, you can figure out exactly what your opponent must have by the betting or tells. Most of the time, you're left to guess a little. In this situation, the other player probably has a very strong hand, but there's a chance he's bluffing or even semi-bluffing.

The strongest hand our hero could be facing is three kings. He has 11 outs to win the pot - every diamond but the 2d, and three queens. But even if our hero makes his flush or straight, his opponent could still win by making a full house or quads on the last card. I could calculate the probability by hand, but I don't need to.

Lessons From the Pros

Instead, I head to the Internet and one of the many free poker odds calculators, such as the one at twodimes.net. Enter "Kd Jd 2c" in the box labeled "Board" and "Ad Td" and "Ks Kc" under "Hands", and click submit. The result says that Ad-Td wins under 34% of the time - less than the 40+% that would make a call the right play. If our hero knows that his opponent had three kings, he should fold. The probabilities for the other possible three-of-a-kinds are the same.

But what if he's up against two pair - kings and jacks? Using the poker calculator again, his probability of winning would be 44%. That's enough to make calling correct. Our hero might also be against other two pairs, which he'd beat a little less often (42%), or A-K (46%). He might even already be ahead if he's against an aggressive player who would semi-bluff with something like Q-T (81%) or Qd-9d (82%).

Having calculated the probabilities of winning, our hero is now left with the subjective part of the answer, guessing the probabilities of what the other player has. I would guess that it's more than twice as likely that the player has two pair, or A-K, or even some weaker hand than that he has three of a kind. And I would guess that maybe 5% to 10% of the time, Ad-Td is actually ahead. I told our hero that, based on the numbers, I would have called.

Our hero did call, and the other player had K-J, giving our hero a 44% chance of winning the hand. The turn card was the 2d, but the river was a jack and our hero's flush lost to a full house. The river card was a tough break, but playing by the numbers, he still made the right play.

It's good to know the numbers, but it's equally important to know how to get them. And if you use the available tools whenever you aren't sure, you'll start to remember them when they come up at the table. In poker, every tool in your toolbox brings you one step closer to mastery of the game.

FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Sportsbook.com has posted odds on the US Open, the final Grand Slam event of the tennis season which starts Monday, August 29 at the USTA National Tennis Centre in Flushing Meadows, New York. American stars Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Venus and Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport are all listed among the pre-tournament favorites, but competition will be tough as they try to keep the crown on US soil.

On the men's side, defending champion Roger Federer is an overwhelming favorite at 1-2 odds. Federer has only captured one Grand Slam this year, compared to three in 2004, but has been dominant with a total record of 54-3 in 2005. In fact, Federer has an incredible record of 138-9 over the past two years and has won 22 straight tournament finals.

Battling Federer for supremacy will be young French Open champion Rafael Nadal (3-1) who won his first hard court event in Montreal last week. Americans Andy Roddick, the 2003 US Open champion and Andre Agassi, champion here in 1994 and 1999 are 5-1 and 10-1 favorites respectively. Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 champion is listed at 12-1 as is 2000 champion Marat Safin.

Kim Clijsters leads the way on the women's side of the draw. Clijsters, a 2-1 favorite, is the hottest player on the women's tour having won three hard court tournaments this summer at Stanford, Los Angeles and last weekend in Toronto. However, Clijsters has never won a Grand Slam event and will be in tough against fellow Belgian and 2003 US Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne (11-5), Maria Sharapova (4-1) and the Williams sisters.

Venus, a US Open winner in 2000 and 2001 is a 6-1 favorite followed by Serena, US Open champion in 1999 and 2002 at 7-1. After a poor 2003 season, both Serena (Australian Open) and Venus (Wimbledon) won Grand Slam events this year and seem to be back in form. Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova is a 20-1 long shot to repeat.

"Wimbledon has the history behind it and the French Open is more popular with some of the European players, but the US Open is probably seen as the most exciting tennis tournament," says Peter Childs, Odds Maker, Sportsbook.com. "Fans and players really get behind this event in the United States, whether it's the New York crowd or the fact that it's the last chance of the year to win a Grand Slam, there's something electric and a little different about this tournament."

Below is a list of odds for both the men's and women's tournament. For more information please visit www.sportsbook.com.

Studies Show Potential Economic Impact, Social Costs of Legalized Casino Gaming in Ohio

CLEVELAND, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Ohio's leaders, lawmakers and citizens now have solid information to determine whether legalizing casinos is a good idea for Ohio. The Greater Cleveland Partnership and some leaders from the Cincinnati business community today released the findings of two studies they commissioned to examine the statewide economic and social implications if casinos were to come to Ohio.

The studies, representing the most comprehensive analysis of the gaming issue undertaken in more than a decade, were done by researchers at Strategic Partner Management Consulting and the Maxine Levin Goodman College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University.

  Significant study findings include:
- Ohio residents are already participating in games of chance and skill
in and around Ohio
- Ohio dollars are leaving the state, generating tax revenues and jobs in
other states
- Social costs of Ohio's problem gamblers are borne entirely by limited
lottery funding ($350,000 a year)
- Social costs of gambling are not insignificant; over the lifetime of
the adult population, 109,000 additional Ohioans could become problem
or pathological gamblers
- Potential revenues from casinos at 11 surrogate locations and the seven
current horse racing tracks are an estimated $4.071 billion a year,
resulting in about $610 million per year in state and local tax
revenues
- Casinos could generate $3.7 billion in temporary construction output
(41,000 construction jobs) and generate and leverage a total of
$8.2 billion in annual operating output (85,000 operating jobs)
- Best practice approach to gambling prevention and treatment could cost
$29.7 million a year

The model used by the researchers places an emphasis on major metropolitan areas, seals off Ohio's borders to reduce the number of Ohioans traveling to a casino in a neighboring state and seeks to avoid situations where Ohio's casinos would compete against each other. The study is not a specific proposal for casino gambling locations in the state, nor is it an endorsement of casino gaming in Ohio. Additionally, no attempt was made to determine the potential use of gaming revenues or the appropriate regulatory structure.

"We consider this study a first step in assisting citizens and leaders at the state and local levels in reaching sound policy decisions about gaming in Ohio," said Joe Roman, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Partnership. "It is important that we arm ourselves with facts when making decisions critical to the future of Ohio."

Now that the studies are complete, leaders across the state can take time to consider the findings before taking a position on the legalization of casinos in Ohio.

Roundtable Blasts Greater Cleveland Partnership's Cleveland State Gambling Study

CLEVELAND, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ohio Roundtable today released a detailed analysis of the gambling study prepared for the Greater Cleveland Partnership and a select group of business leaders. The Roundtable criticized the Cleveland State College of Urban Affairs for publishing a report that they state was clearly biased and focused on manipulating voters.

Roundtable President David Zanotti and Legislative Affairs Director Melanie Elsey wrote the five-page analysis that challenges what they say are the shallow research conclusions and flawed economic assumptions of the Greater Cleveland Partnership/Cleveland State University report. The Roundtable also questioned whether a tax-funded University such as CSU should be publishing research for undisclosed clients whose motives are to change the laws of Ohio for potential personal profit.

A full copy of the Roundtable analysis is below, and is available at www.APRoundtable.org.

A Review of the 2005 Greater Cleveland Partnership Study on Casinos for Ohio

  Prepared by: The Ohio Roundtable
David Zanotti, President/CEO
Melanie Elsey, Director of Legislative Affairs

The "study" produced by the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University is packaged to bear the credibility of a serious work of research. However, the work carries a profound bias from start to finish. It is a bias that matches the special interests of the undisclosed corporate leaders who paid for the study.

The following brief analysis raises serious points of factual contention regarding the work commissioned by The Greater Cleveland Partnership and "Selected Cincinnati Area Businesses".

Who chose the "three important questions" regarding casino gambling in Ohio and why were just these three questions selected?

The study claims to be directed toward the purpose of helping "leaders and voters understand the social effects of opening casinos in the state." Why would any legitimate economic or sociological impact study be targeted directly to Ohio voters, unless it is designed to be used as a campaign tool by the sponsors?

Thus, in the very first line of the Executive Summary, this study is self- defined as part of a political movement to influence Ohio voters on the issue of casino gambling. This raises a bigger ethical/legal question: Are the taxpayers of Ohio, who help underwrite Cleveland State University's College of Urban Affairs, being used to pay for the private profiteering of a secret group of pro-casino business leaders?

Three questions are proffered as the basis of the study; all relating to the social costs of problem and pathological gamblers if 18 casinos opened across the state. By choosing to focus only on one of the complicated economic, political, legal, tribal and historical questions surrounding the gambling debate the authors have marginalized their own work.

"Existing and Future number of Ohioans with Chronic Gambling Problems"

In this section the authors fail to present a clear, logically consistent approach to the three questions they offer. They begin by quoting a range of gambling addictions that is static at 2% to 5% of the adult population. The rising rate of gambling addictions among teenagers is completely disregarded in their projections. They project only a 1% increase in addiction should Ohio, which has no casinos operating today, open 18 facilities in the next few years. Their 1% increased projection is a total guess. There is no statistical validation for this projection.

The authors concede 18 new casinos "could lead to an additional 109,000 residents becoming serious problem gamblers". The authors walk away from this conclusion as if it bears no real-life tragedy. It is simply a number, and most likely a low number at that.

The authors fail to even mention the substantive data compiled by the University of Michigan, Harvard University and the National Research Council for the United States Congress. (See the National Gambling Impact Study Commission Report Table 4-2, http://www.ohioroundtable.org/gaminginfo/NationalGamblingStudy2.pdf). There is also substantial and readily available information from the real-world experiences of communities that have tried the casino gambling experiment. None of this data is considered by the Cleveland State report. An honest review of this data reveals the projected 1% increase in gambling addictions is anchored in thin air.

"Chronic Gambling and Personal Financial Issues"

Consider the abundant contradictions in the following language of the CSU report:

"People with gambling addictions do have higher debt levels and are more likely to file for personal bankruptcy protection. However, a statistical link between the presence of casinos and personal bankruptcy filings has not been found."

This language bears an eerie likeness to the writings of the tobacco companies in the 1960's and '70's. Because the CSU professors cannot find a study to statistically isolate the reality of the data, they play the mind game of ignoring the obvious - even after stating it exists.

Back in the late 20th century the tobacco companies said it this way. "We see that smokers die more often from cancer and lung disease than the rest of the population. But some smokers die of other causes so you cannot prove in any study there is an isolated, direct, one-to-one correlation between smoking and cancer and lung disease. We simply need more money and time for research."

The CSU study says it this way. "We see gamblers have real problems with addictions and social costs. They even go broke and kill themselves more than the general population. But science cannot prove gambling is the cause. Therefore, we need more money to help problem gamblers. The best way to get the money is to open 18 casinos in Ohio. More gambling will help solve more gambling problems."

"Chronic Gambling and Social and Health Problems"

After conceding, "People with gambling addictions are more likely than non-gamblers to have committed a crime or to have been incarcerated during their lifetimes", the authors state there is no connection between casino gambling and crime. They fall back to the discredited strategy of blaming increased crime solely on the increase of people that gather around a casino. Evidently, the authors have never ventured off the Boardwalk in Atlantic City or spoken to law enforcement veterans in that casino-dominated city.

Regarding health problems among problem gamblers, the CSU study disregards significant data from the Congressional National Gambling Impact Commission Report. (Table 7-1, www.ohioroundtable.org/gaminginfo/NationalGamblingStudy.pdf). In a clear case of Orwellian double-speak the authors concede problem gamblers suffer from greater "physical ailments, suicide rates, higher divorce rates, and increased levels of family abuse" but then go on to claim there are no studies that "isolate the causality" between these maladies and problem gambling. What further evidence does the CSU team require to validate the connection between these problems? Are they waiting for a "gambling suicide gene" to be discovered in the brains of dead gambling addicts?

How would the CSU team account for the suicide of police officer Solomon Bell, who gambled at the tables of the MGM casino in Detroit? The officer went into the casino, lost his money, pulled out a gun and killed himself right there on the property. The casino cleaned up the mess and kept on doing business. The same attitude of isolated denial seems evident in the CSU study.

"Chronic Gambling and Societal Costs"

The authors reject any causal link between problem gambling and the horrific problems gambling addicts experience. Therefore, the CSU team states, " ... it is not prudent to fix a net cost figure on the higher levels of problem gamblers in the state."

In other words, we cannot ignore the facts these problems exist but we cannot "scientifically" prove casino gambling plays any role in the problems. Therefore, we will pretend there is no real dollar figure associated with the human costs of casino gambling. Casino gambling will cost something, but we cannot project what it will cost so we will pretend the costs do not exist.

"Chronic Gambling and the Cost to Ohio"

In a crescendo of prejudicial bias the CSU research team offers a patronizing sop to the taxpayers and victims of gambling disorders. Since gamblers have problems, we must pay for the problems. Therefore we must open 18 casinos in the state so the state will have enough money to help gamblers with their problems. The researchers are clueless as to how to fix a net cost to these problems but demand Ohio raise enough money to treat the affected individuals.

The logic here is circular. We need at least 18 casinos in Ohio to pay for all the problems gambling addictions create. Forget attempting to solve the problem at the source and save 109,000 more people the horror of an addicted life. Just find a way to "service" their problems with increased gambling revenues.

State of Ohio Gaming Market Assessment - Executive Summary

This section of the report is a further attempt to distort economic facts of the casino business. The report is inaccurate in the following points:

   1) It uses the Harrah's study on the Profile of the American Gambler but
fails to acknowledge the report is a telephone survey not an actual
accounting of the real trade numbers of a single casino in America. In
citing more than "2 million Ohio casino visits in 2002 and 2003" the
study does not reveal how many visits were repeat visits by Ohioans -
hiding the gambling industry's darkest secret, that it thrives on the
creation of problem and pathological gamblers.
2) On page 5 the following statement occurs: "Ohio is charged with many
of the costs associated with casino gaming and receives none of the
benefits." In the first five pages of the study the authors
consistently denied any quantifiable costs directly linked to casino
gambling. Suddenly they change their tune by blaming other states for
turning Ohioans into addicts with significant social costs. Their
solution? Ohio must immediately open 18 casinos so we can pay for the
costs casinos in West Virginia and Indiana are creating for Ohio.
3) On page 6 the researchers make a statement that is stunning. To make
their casino plan work they acknowledge they must "seal the borders"
to keep Ohio gamblers gambling in Ohio only. Yet there is no
scientific study that reveals any state has ever succeeded in sealing
their borders to traveling gamblers. Such an unrealistic objective
calls the balance of all their economic projections into question.
4) Again on page 6 the economic formula requires attracting new visitors
and increasing spending from existing visitors. The research on
regional casinos proves time and again that most casino players are
"locals" not "visitors". At best Ohio can hope for "day trippers" from
nearby border states but the competition is fierce and busses travel
to and from Ohio. This unrealistic expectation runs contrary to the
well-know market facts of regional casino gambling.
5) The authors concede there will be a "redirection of existing spending
within Ohio" but offer few solutions to the problem. At best they
imply Ohioans who lose their jobs because of the casinos could get a
job in the casinos. This is very important because the authors are
establishing a baseline of gambling from Ohioans that is much higher
in 2008 than the $925 million they claim Ohioans are currently
gambling. The increased gambling revenue of $2.975 billion by 2008
means $2 billion will leave the existing Ohio economy and flow into
the casinos. How many jobs will be lost as that $2 billion dollars
disappear from the local consumer economy?
6) "Maximize the competitive position and viability of Ohio race tracks
and casinos" is another criteria on page 6. This type of language is
regularly used by casino lobbyists to strong arm state legislatures.
Tax breaks and reductions, increased facilities and fewer regulations
are all part of keeping casino owners "competitive" and profitable.
7) On page 7 the study announces the "winners and losers" in the grand
casino design. No mention is made of any commission or legislative
body that will direct location, licensing and fees. The seven
racetracks are given automatic consideration regardless of geography
or history. This is a direct challenge to the Ohio Constitution which
requires a uniform operation of laws across the state. By granting an
automatic casino license to racetracks the state will be eliminating
competitive bidding and creating a preferred monopoly for racetrack
owners.
8) The estimates used to bring Ohio and 18 casinos into the year 2008 are
most intriguing with $2.975 billion coming from the local economy. But
if other states are working to "seal their borders" as well, how will
Ohio casinos top $4 billion in revenue by 2008?
9) In the height of irony the study concludes that with $4 billion in new
casino gambling in Ohio the casinos will only provide $610 million in
direct tax revenue. It is not clear how this money will be divided
between the state and local communities. Even assuming all $610
million went to the state - casinos in 2008 would fail to provide as
much money as the current Ohio Lottery. The lottery consistently
produces over $650 million to Ohio on roughly $2 billion in annual
sales - half the total revenue projected in the CSU model.
10) The CSU model is completely silent on the tribal controversy
currently raging across Ohio. Terry Casey, spokesperson for the
Eastern Shawnee tribe, is enthusiastically promoting the CSU study
for one simple reason: The tribe fully understands that if Ohio
installs a single slot machine in a racetrack or casino, the tribes
can claim Ohio has crossed the federal threshold and has become a
class III gambling state. Once that happens tribes will fight in
courts for Ohio lands solely for the purpose of opening casinos. Once
Ohio is a class III state under the federal law (IGRA) it will be
very difficult to stop tribal casinos from opening. Tribal casinos
are not obligated to pay a penny to state or local governments in
taxes and operate as sovereign nations. The CSU projections are being
made in total disregard to the very real problems created for
commercial casinos and local governments by tribal casinos. This fact
alone renders the CSU study virtually useless in the current legal
and political climate in Ohio.

Summary

It is obvious that the research team from Cleveland State directed their efforts toward creating a positive spin for casino gambling in Ohio. Their work is similar to studies created by accounting and PR firms hoping to influence voters in the 1990 and 1996 statewide ballot campaigns. The economic and legal issues surrounding casinos have grown far more challenging as the casino industry battles the tribal community for limited gambling revenues.

Pro-gambling researchers and advocates consistently inflate the "lost revenue argument" to the Ohio media. In reality, there is nothing Ohio can do to stop residents from traveling to gamble wherever they choose. "Sealing the borders" is an unworkable and anti-constitutional concept. Opening 18 casinos in Ohio will drain at least $2 billion more gambling dollars from the Ohio consumer economy. This is money that is NOT being gambled today but is being spent on homes, food, cars, consumer goods, college tuition, charitable purposes and entertainment.

If every Ohio gambler stayed home today and only gambled in Ohio casinos, according to statistics from the gambling industry, the net gain to the state of Ohio would be approximately $300 million annually. That is a mere 1.2% of the current state budget.

The potential owners of the Ohio casinos would make billions but state and local communities would be left with a fraction of the proceeds - hardly enough to restore any economy let alone pay for the serious downsides recognized by all honest researchers of the gambling industry.

Well www.acesoverqueens.com is here today to tell you that online poker is as safe as going to a regular casino, or safe as putting your money in the bank. All the big sites like Party Poker, Poker Champs, Poker Stars, and so on all have random card generators that you can read about by going to their respective sites. None have ever reported any instance of anything bad happening to any of their customers, and none would allow their customers to take the loss. Party Poker for instance is one of the best at this. According to their site "The PartyPoker.com payment processing center uses high levels of data encryption. Our Payment Processing Center uses 128 bit encryption to ensure the highest level of privacy and confidentiality of your data both to and from the online poker room."

They go on by saying, "Providing a safe and secure gaming environment to our players is vital for the success of PartyPoker.com. To that end, we develop and employ state-of-the-art systems that ensure and maintain a collusion-free environment.

The RNG (random number generator) system used by PartyPoker.com ensures that players get a fair deal each and every time. The RNG system generates innumerable permutations and combinations in the 52-card deck when dealing cards that it is virtually impossible to predict. To be considered truly random, numbers must be unpredictable and not related to each other in any way.

Taking our security system to the next level is our one-of-a-kind collusion prevention system, which we created with the help of renowned poker personality Mike Sexton. Our collusion prevention system detects fraud patterns and identifies colluders. The system employs highly sophisticated automated tools that both detect and prevent players who try to defraud others by getting an unfair advantage over them."

As you can see there is nothing unsafe about poker on the internet as long as you stay on the tip of the iceberg poker sites. To see a full list of safe online poker sites visit www.AcesoverQueens.com.

2005 NFL Season Predictions: An Analysis of Football Betting Odds

2005 NFL Season Predictions: An Analysis of Football Betting Odds

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

When coming up with your own 2005 NFL season predictions, be sure to use online bookmaker future betting odds as a reference and always be ready for some interesting surprises.

Miami Beach, Fla., (PRWEB) August 23, 2005 -- Always on the cutting edge of the online sports betting realm, Gambling911.com now features a thorough division-by-division breakdown of future betting odds as provided by long time G911 sponsor, www.bestlinesports.com.

In the AFC East, BestLine Sports lists the New England Patriots and New York Jets with fairly close odds and New England a small favorite (-250) while New York gets some decent value at +250. The Patriots pay out $100 for every $250 bet while New York pays out $250 for every $100 bet. That is the major difference here.

"The Buffalo Bills are cited by Gambling911.com as a value play," commented Christopher Costigan, founder and president of Gambling911.com. "We see this team as having the potential to surprise in their respective division, and with payout odds set at +700 early on, there is an opportunity to win some good money."

A $100 bet pays $700 on the Buffalo Bills.

The long shot of the AFC East with its massive payout odds is the Miami Dolphins, listed at BestLine Sports with payout odds of +1100. For every $100 wagered, this one pays out just over $1000. It is the type of future bet to have a little fun with if you can spare to lose some dough.

The AFC North has what many believe to be two powerhouses in Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Johnny Magnum and the Boys at BestLine Sports list the Ravens as a very small -125 favorite and the Steelers as a near even +120 dog. The AFC North will wreak havoc with nearly everyone's 2005 NFL season predictions. To make matters worse, BestLine Sports features the Bengals with +320 payout odds to win their respective division, surprising considering the two dominant teams here.

"Gambling911.com doesn't necessarily feel that Cleveland will win this division, however, we do feel that they will win more than the 4 1/2 regular season games that BestLine Sports has them winning," Costigan said.

Cleveland is listed with +1500 odds to win the AFC North as an fyi.

Not surprisingly in the AFC South, BestLine Sports like most of their colleagues in the online sports betting industry - as well as Vegas for that matter - have pinpointed Indianapolis as the team to beat this year. Most have them going to the Super Bowl. In order to win $100, one would have to lay $400. Is it worth the heavy risk? Jaguars pay out +350, Texans, +800, Titans, +850.

There are no clear cut favorites in the AFC West, so arriving at 2005 NFL season predictions in this division amounts to either a crap shoot or some heavy duty studying.

"Here you have a division where we don't really know if San Diego was a fluke last season. Denver has played subpar all the time since Elway retired. Oakland has some talented but questionable characters on their roster so we don't really know what to expect. And the Chiefs simply underperformed last season, so what is to stop this from happening again in 2005?"

Needless-to-say, BestLine Sports lists each of these four teams at +200 and a little bit of change.

The NFC East would normally be among the easiest divisions to predict if not for all the distractions in Philadephia's locker room. Parcells might finally have the team he has been searching for all along in Dallas, with the word "might" being the operative word here. Because even with the Eagles preseason turmoil, they are probably still a better team than any other in this division, including Dallas.

Philadelphia is listed with -450 odds. Dallas is +450; Giants are +775 and the Redskins are also posted at +775.

The NFC North could prove interesting even though many experts have Minnesota as the 2005/2006 team to beat in this conference. They are listed with near even odds (terrific value in fact) while both Green Bay and Detroit have odds of +300.
The Bears look to be in trouble early on, though BestLineSports.com has them posted with +600 odds to win their respective division.

Interesting situation in the NFC South with both Atlanta and Carolina virtually neck and neck with +115 and +175 odds, respectively.

"Gambling911.com, like a lot of the experts, feels that the Atlanta Falcons provide some great value at those impressive odds," Costigan stated.

The Saints have such a poor history, it is actually surprising to see them posted with a mere +350 to win this division. Can you imagine having New Orleans to win their division with $100 and only walking away with $350? Something doesn't seem right there. Tampa could perform well, though Gambling911 feels it will take another season for the Buccaneers to excel once again. They are listed with +450 odds.

And finally, the NFC West is anybody's guess. 2005 NFL season predictions must take into account whether the Cardinals will finally develop into something semi-significant at +220 odds (and past history tends to make this a hard pill to swallow); whether St. Louis can show some consistency with +200 odds; whether the Seahawks will do something spectacular (another hard pill to swallow at +100 odds) and whether a miracle will somehow happen in San Francisco. If you believe in miracles, put $100 down on the 49'ers. They pay out 3500 to 1 or $350,000 on a $100 bet. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot between Arizona, Seattle and St. Louis.

Online Poker Site Brings Refreshing Options for Beginner Players

Online Poker Site Brings Refreshing Options for Beginner Players

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

AcrossTheFelt.com launched their online poker site this week with a poker community that focuses on the beginner player. Focusing primarily on low limit tables and inexpensive entries (as low as 6 cents) into tournaments that pay out large sums of money (up to $14,000 for the top prize), AcrossTheFelt.com propels to the front of the pack in the online poker game as a paramount site for beginners.

Toronto, Ontario (PRWeb) August 24, 2005 -- Play for one penny, win $14,000 for as little as 6 cents, or play for free. AcrossTheFelt.com has formed a niche in the market focusing primarily on attracting the beginner-level player.

Derek Andrucko and Chris Sokoloski were tired of playing poker online on the existing sites that jammed as many as 30,000 people onto one site at any given night of the week. Tournaments with thousands of people, tables filling up in a matter of seconds, and table formats that operated for one purpose only, and that is, to make more money faster. Usually, this means a deteriorated experience for the players. That is, faster blind structure and shorter stack for starting chips, to name a few.

AcrossTheFelt.com hopes to provide an online poker community that focuses on the player.

“If we create a favourable environment for the players then everything else will take care of itself,” says founder, and Chief Operating Officer, Chris Sokoloski. He continues to say, “Our goal is to prevent our users from experiencing the frustrations all online players experienced up until now with the big-name sites.”

It appears that the competition on AcrossTheFelt.com reflects the target audience. PokerCompetition.net ranks AcrossTheFelt.com first for the easiest players to challenge. The site states, “Familiar faces, recreational play, and predictable players make AcrossTheFelt.com one of the best sites to learn how to play while minimizing your loss (or maximizing your profits).”

Whispers about the tournaments at AcrossTheFelt.com have created quite the buzz on popular poker discussion groups. The “Multi-stage” tournaments at AcrossTheFelt.com create a format that allows a $12 entry to win a WPT entry ($14,000 in value) by only eliminating 22 players. The same tournament can be entered at a lower stage for only 6 cents.

Whether it is the low entry fees, beginner-level play, or small community of players, AcrossTheFelt.com is targeting an audience that no other site has. With a professional looking site, and easy-to-use interface, the experience with AcrossTheFelt.com is a sure win.

Slotland.com to Sponsor Novice Bowling Tournament

Popular international slots casino, Slotland.com, has called upon novice bowlers in Canada to play in its inaugural Super Bowl Novice Bowling Tournament, for the chance to win Slotland.com bowling sponsorship, $1,700 in prize money and thousands of dollars in vouchers for play at Slotland.com. Four bowling centres in and around Vancouver, BC, have agreed to host the Super Bowl tournament, which will run over a 2 month period starting in September.

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) August 26, 2005 -- Popular international slots casino, Slotland.com, has called upon novice bowlers in Canada to play in its inaugural Super Bowl Novice Bowling Tournament, for the chance to win Slotland.com bowling sponsorship, $1,700 in prize money and thousands of dollars in vouchers for play at Slotland.com. Four bowling centres in and around Vancouver, BC, have agreed to host the Super Bowl tournament, which will run over a two month period starting in September.

Each bowler who enters the tournament automatically receives a voucher for $200 to be spent at Slotland.com. Winning teams in each of the qualifying House matches will win $300 and advance to the Super Bowl Championship where they’ll compete for the regional title, Slotland.com sponsorship, $300 Slotland.com voucher for each winning team player and an additional $500 Grand Prize. The tournament coordinators from bowling centres from Maple Ridge to Port Coquitlam believe that the prospect of Slotland.com’s sponsorship will draw many first-time competitors.

Slotland.com’s Super Bowl is designed to allow recreational bowlers to play in an official competition and win cash prizes, by stipulating that team members’ averages be less than 150 points per game. Super Bowl will adopt the popular Five-Pin format. Five-Pin is a fast, Canadian version of bowling invented in Toronto in the twenties when downtown office-workers took to bowling on their half-hour lunch breaks.

Novice bowler Marge Fairweather has been a bowling enthusiast for years but has never felt that she played to the standard to participate in regular bowling competitions.

"I absolutely enjoy bowling, so this is a way I can play, test my ability against other people at the same level, and ultimately win some cash!" said Ms Fairweather. "Even if I don’t win my local match or the major prize there is no harm done," Ms Fairweather remarked.

Tammy Morin, the manager at Grandview Lanes said: "Novice bowling doesn’t usually get this kind of attention. Lots of our bowlers play slots too, so everyone thinks the association with Slotland.com is kind of cool."

Slotland.com knows all about providing adrenalin-pumping entertainment and making dreams come true. The online casino witnesses happy customers everyday who take that much-deserved holiday or start their dream business because of their success at Slotland.com. Super Bowl aims to fulfill a dream of the novice, recreational bowler by giving away sponsorship, cash prizes and the chance to hone their bowling skills for future grand-scale tournaments.

Last winter, Slotland.com funded a Canadian curling team who had their sights set on Olympic gold. Slotland.com’s funding enabled the team to make it to more events on the Ontario Curling Tour and gain the tournament experience they needed. In a Sweep Magazine interview this winter, the team’s Skip, Gerry Guerts said: "We are all exceptionally happy with the end of season result, and the support of our title sponsor, Slotland.com, helped us get there. The 2004/2005 season was a success for everybody involved in the sponsorship."

Hannah Morante, Marketing Manager at Slotland.com said it was the success of the curling team sponsorship that led to supporting another Novice sport. "We received lots of positive feedback for the curling team we sponsored. At Slotland.com, any one can win – we’re in the business of realizing hopes and aspirations."

Slotland.com Super Bowl Tournament Schedule:
Dell Lanes, Surrey, September 24
REVS, Maple Ridge, October 8
Varsity Ridge, Vancouver, October 16
Grandview Lanes, Vancouver, October 30
Super Bowl Championship, November 13

Casino Favorites Tomb Raider™ and Texas Tea™ Video Slots Now Offered Online

Download this press release as an Adobe PDF document.

Two popular video slot machines, Tomb Raider™ and Texas Tea™, which were previously only available to slot players in brick and mortar casinos, are now available online as internet casinos attempt to lure slot players away from land based casinos by offering the same state-of-the-art theme-based video slots found in casinos. One website that is encouraging this trend is play-video-poker-slots.com which reviews the latest virtual slots and video poker games and provides the most popular of these games for visitors to enjoy for free without downloading or depositing funds at an online casino.

(PRWEB) August 26, 2005 -- Usually, when online casino players play slots, they don't see the 'Big Name' Games, like Wheel of Fortune™, I Dream of Jeanie™, Texas Tea™ and Jeopardy™ video slots, simply because these brands are very expensive to license or have exclusive licensing deals with slot machine manufacturers. Casinos pay big bucks to offer these popular, theme-based slots to their patrons and, until recently, these exclusive licensing offers were unheard of online.

Online casino gaming software providers do a great job of offering state-of-the-art games that are similar to favorite land-based slots, albeit with different names and slightly different themes. Many of these online slots have a similar look and feel to the favorites, but they are not exact duplicates of the games found at local land based casinos. Until now.

The latest trend in online gaming is to offer the most popular brand-name video slots that casino players enjoy so much in the virtual world. Players are anxious to try out these theme-based slot machines online, but several obstacles have, until recently, stood in their way. Namely, players do not know where to find these virtual slot machines online and many players would prefer to have the option to play such games as Tomb Raider™ and Texas Tea™ video slots for free.

Now online slots players have a wealth of options available to them via the website http://www.play-video-poker-slots.com which is currently offering both of these popular online slots games in no download format and as free play or real money games.

Both Tomb Raider™ and Texas Tea™ video slots have been developed as 5 reel, 15 payline, multiple coin slot games featuring wild and scatter symbols, multiple bonus features and free spin rounds. Both games feature brilliantly vivid, richly colored graphics and exciting interactive themes.

The website http://play-video-poker-slots.com is an evaluator of slots and video poker games and provides strategy and related information, as well as the most popular video slots and video poker games in free, no download format so that players may evaluate and enjoy these games.

Poker Hits the Road

Software allows users to play live poker on their cellular phones.

(PRWEB) August 28, 2005 -- Anyone with a television knows that poker has fast become one of the most popular pastimes in North America, if not the world. Casinos are reporting record numbers of poker players, with lengthy waits for those wishing to play live. Even bigger than the "bricks and mortar" boom, is that which has occurred online. PokerRoom (www.pokerroom.com/?ref=7196) has taken poker one step further, and given their players the option to bring their game with them, with the advent of live mobile poker games.

Over the past five years, online poker rooms have experienced a huge influx of players. Those who do not live within easy distance of a casino have utilized the ease and convenience of playing poker online. Each year, the number of online poker players doubles, and 2005 is not expected to be an exception.

With the growing interest in online poker, it is not surprising that numerous poker sites have developed. To stand out from its competitors, Poker Room has developed "mobile poker" (see www.pokerroom.com/?ref=7196). Players can download poker software to their cell phones, and play while commuting, on work-breaks, between classes, or anytime they are away from their computer. This software allows individuals to play for free or real money games and tournaments.

PokerRoom has been an innovator in other areas as well. Most poker software is incompatible with the Macintosh computer system. However, PokerRoom has designed its software to allow Mac users access, as well.

In addition to these innovations, PokerRoom has created promotion codes which allow new players to receive bonus cash. By using the promotion code poker200 players are given a 40% bonus, based on initial deposit(up to $200).

Poker is definitely here to stay – and thanks to PokerRoom (www.pokerroom.com/?ref=7196) now you can take it wherever you go.
